This policy and accompanying documents outline how the organisation will meet these responsibilities and provide clear guidance to staff, volunteers, visitors, and parents on expected behaviour as well as our legal obligation to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children and young people at our organisation.

All staff play an important role in detecting signs of potential abuse or neglect through their interactions with children. It is critical that all employees understand what to do if they have any concerns. Staff will foster an environment in which children are encouraged to speak and are listened to. They will be aware of the signs of abuse and take any concerns seriously.

Our ethos

Edubox will create and maintain an environment in which our children feel secure, encouraged to speak, listened to, and safe. Children will be able to speak freely to any member of staff, volunteer, or regular visitor to our organisation if they are worried or concerned about something and feel safe.

If a child is worried or concerned about something, they can freely discuss it with any member of staff, volunteer, or regular visitor to our organisation. All staff, volunteers, and regular visitors will be trained or inducted in how to recognise and manage a child's disclosure. We will not make promises to any child, nor will we keep secrets.

Every child will understand what the adult will do with what they have been told. We will provide activities and opportunities that will teach our children the skills they need to be safe. We will always work collaboratively and strive to establish effective working relationships with parents, carers, and colleagues from other agencies and organisations.

Key principles:

  • Always see the child first

  • Never do nothing

  • Do with, not to, others

  • Do the simple things better

  • Have conversations, build relationships

  • Outcomes not outputs

Edubox will ensure an appropriate level of safeguarding training is available to its trustees, employees, volunteers and any relevant persons linked to the organisation who requires it (e.g. contractors).

For all employees who are working or volunteering with children, this requires them as a minimum to have awareness training that enables them to:

  • Understand what safeguarding is and their role in safeguarding children.

  • Recognise a child potentially in need of safeguarding and take action.

  • Understand how to report a safeguarding alert.

  • Understand dignity and respect when working with children.

  • Have knowledge of the Safeguarding Children Policy

Some organisations in England, Scotland and Wales have a duty, as a specified authority under section 26 of the Counterterrorism and Security Act 2015, to identify vulnerable children and young people and prevent them from being drawn into terrorism. This is known as the Prevent duty.

These organisations include:

  • Schools • Registered childcare providers

  • Local authorities

  • Police

  • Prisons and probation services

  • NHS trusts and foundations.

  • Other organisations may also have Prevent duties if they perform delegated local authority functions.

Children can be exposed to diverse viewpoints and information from a variety of sources. Some of these viewpoints may be considered radical or extremist.

Radicalisation is the process by which an individual comes to support or participate in extremist ideologies. It can lead to a person becoming involved in terrorism, which is itself a form of harm.

Extremism is the vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values such as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance for different faiths and beliefs.
